KARMA; A CONFUSION OR A REALITY



KARMA





All  music videos above simplify the general perception of Karma. They adequately explain what most people think about when they evoke the 'inevitable force and energy' that evens out odds and sets straight the crooked and wrong; That high and mighty authority that ought to punish injustice through pure deserving judgment. But what exactly is this power?

Karma is a Hindu term for action. Wikipedia explains that the term refers to ‘the spiritual principle of cause and effect where intent and actions of an individual (cause) influence the future of that individual (effect). Good intent and good deeds contribute to good karma and future happiness, while bad intent and bad deeds contribute to bad karma and future suffering’.

Karma therefore repays your deeds in your own coins. If you act selfishly, Karma will repay you the punishment for your selfishness but if you do good, good will come back to you.
If you’ve lived within the past half decade, then Karma is a term you’ve heard especially among the youth. Just look at these:

It is evident to me that many people want someone punished. If only there were laws (I mean judicial and spiritual laws) that allowed it, people will willingly cut off the heads of other people who hurt them. This is because, by popular concession, there is not much justice in the world. Just count how many people hurt you and got away with it. Since we cannot punish them ourselves, there has to be some force somewhere that makes them pay for what they did. And this payment must be instant so that we’ll get to see it and be satisfied. We want to see them regret bitterly.

Now that is quite a sound logic in many ways but this logic ignores the argument of nature versus nurture in the development of man (Are human beings inherently the way we are (as in, it’s in our gene) or are we the product of our environment and society).

RETRIBUTION
Have you ever imagined someone suffer tremendously for hurting you? For example you imagined beating them yourself with some wonderful Kunfu moves just because they insulted you. DOES KARMA HAPPEN?
No! As simple as that. It’s a wishful thinking. I personally don’t want Karma to happen because I don’t think crime should be taken as simply as it looks. A lot of nurtural (nurture-wise) factors account for why people behave the way they do. Though I believe in personal choice of action, you don’t just ascribe punishment on face value. That is why I support the Holy Bible’s saying that one must not pay evil with evil and that vengeance belongs to the God. Also that, anyone who repents will be forgiven. I’d rather people are forgiven.

So what happens when people seem to pay for their actions?
That is what I call consequence. Consequence is the natural effect of the choices you make. If you feed on evil thoughts and acts, you are likely to do evil deeds. Then evil deeds corrupt your character and makes you vulnerable to lawful reprisal and socially established consequences. It is not Karma that is hunting you down. Nature takes its course. It is totally natural. The natural consequences of your actions need not be instant too.
Now, I am a Christian and I believe in the God justice but God justice is different from the Karma people want to believe. God is more inclined to forgive if you repent yet, He still allows you to suffer the natural consequences of your action. Karma just chases you until it gets you.
So simple: YOU SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCE OF YOUR ACTION. It is genetic; it is natural and it is social.
Do not live a life of vengeance. Forgive and move on. Being unforgiving is like poisoning yourself and expecting someone else to die. If you’re relying on Karma, then you have not yet dealt with you past and you’re not free. Don’t allow yourself to be bitter always.
To deal with bitterness, I recommend you see a Pastor of a Christian congregation or Church. God is the master of forgiveness. He will help you to forgive. This is GUARANTEED. Don't imagine that people get hurt. Deal with your hurt.
